Remember to record your personal possessions for your Homeowners Insurance!

There are two parts to filing a homeowners claim. The first is to confirm you possessed the objects and then you must substantiate their value. The simplest approach is to take your video camera and a few hours of your time to walk through your home (this includes attic, basement, garage, any outbuildings, etc.) and document on tape ALL of your belongings. If you don\'t have a video camera, you can always take still photos, which you can label, or make a detailed written list. Record the purchase dates and serial numbers, as well as any receipts you have retained. Appraisals are also important when recording art, jewelry, or collectibles. This may sound like a lot of work, but the headaches it will save you in the event of a loss will make up for it in the end! Keep your inventory safe for easy retrieval in a safety deposit box, which of course, will be stored with your homeowner\'s insurance policy. If you store your inventory at your home, it\'s a good idea to give keep a copy at your workplace or possibly with a good friend or your family. And don\'t neglect to update your list as you purchase new items or make updates to your home!

What you have to remember is that ultimately it is up to you to prove to the insurance carrier what you had in your home. Don\'t count on your memory as you will be required to prove to the insurance carrier what you owned and how many of each. A simple video of your possessions will not only eliminate the risk of forgetting but also help you save time when dealing with your insurance carrier. At the end of the day, insurance is designed to make you whole. Without evidence of your possessions, you will have a hard time accomplishing this.
